Established in 1981 by Professor Joseph Gordon, the Hulbert Center for 西南航空研究 was the first regional interdisciplinary program in the nation.
Its original mission was to create curriculum with Southwest content at 科罗拉多大学, nurture a community of scholars who could serve the region through teaching 和 publishing 和 create community outreach programs educating the community at-large about the Southwest. 自2005年以来, with the addition of a critical regional 西南航空研究 academic program 和 full-time faculty, we now offer students 和 affiliated faculty the opportunity to engage with diverse l和scapes 和 cultures of what we consider "the center place" (the Greater Southwest)
In 1991, the historic 沉闷的房子 became the headquarters of 西南航空研究. The Mediterranean style stucco building with a red tile roof was built in 1923 by Joseph Jackson Dern, a Colorado Springs Banker 和 CC trustee from 1935-1939 和 1942-1946.
Benchmarks in the growth of the Hulbert Center have included facilitating the purchase 和 management of the Baca Campus in Crestone (1990), 建立一个 西南航空研究 Major 和 Minor (2005) addition of full-time faculty (2005, 2011, 2016) to better serve the educational needs of 科罗拉多大学 和 our re搜索 extension 和 partnerships with peoples of this region. 最近，在 2020, the 西南航空研究 program added a 新小 for students to reflect our college's anti-racism initiative: Chicanx-Latinx研究.

- Jackson Fellows Scholars Program (1988) funded by the Helen Jackson 和 William S. Jackson Family Endowment. Supports CC faculty to develop new interdisciplinary courses with Southwestern content 和 to publish re搜索 on the region.
- W. M. 凯克基金会 (2002) grant to the Hulbert Center funded the 科罗拉多大学's first Geographic Information Systems (GIS) computer lab.

Because an important part of its mission is outreach to the larger community, the Hulbert Center also sponsors
- The Aficionados Luncheons, a monthly speaker's series which presents scholars, 作者, 艺术家, activists 和 others who bring new perspectives on the Southwest.
